Maintain and enhance the internal Apache Kafka distribution by directly modifying core components such as Broker, KRaft controller, protocol layer, clients, and storage engine.
Develop and maintain performance testing suites, benchmarks, and validation tools for patches and releases, ensuring stability for large-scale production use.
Contribute upstream to Apache Kafka through bug fixes, code reviews, test cases, documentation, and participate in community design discussions.
Minimum Requirements
Strong experience in Java or Scala with ability to read, modify, and debug JVM-based system code.
Demonstrable experience in systems or infrastructure software engineering focused on distributed middleware or database engines.
Understanding of distributed systems fundamentals including consensus protocols, replication models, log-structured storage, and distributed state management.
Work Experience Required: Several years in relevant systems or infrastructure software engineering roles.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Experienced with JVM internals and operating system I/O optimizations relevant to distributed systems.
Familiar with Apache Kafka internals and preferably prior contributions or knowledge of comparable distributed systems like Pulsar, BookKeeper, ZooKeeper, or etcd.
Capable of working in a highly technical environment focused on open-source core system development, with ability to work on complex distributed consensus and storage system issues.
