Niche mainframe skill reduces applicants, but metro location and known employer increase competition.
Mainframe z/OS system programming skills are highly specialized and not easily transferable across industries.
Explicit 7+ years plus mandatory z/OS, SMP/E, JES, subsystems and production SLA experience increases shortlisting strictness.
Lead and manage IBM z/OS mainframe system programming including upgrades, migrations, and SMP/E maintenance.
Oversee core components such as JES, storage, networking, and enterprise subsystems (CICS, DB2, IMS, MQ) ensuring performance, capacity optimization, security, and compliance.
Provide production support, incident resolution, root cause analysis, disaster recovery, and collaborate with teams and vendors for modernization and SLA adherence.
7+ years of IBM z/OS system programming experience with strong knowledge of z/OS internals and architecture.
Proficiency in SMP/E installation, maintenance, and upgrade management, and JES2/JES3 administration.
Experience with mainframe storage (DASD, DFSMS, HSM), networking (TCP/IP, VTAM), system upgrades, migrations, automation, security, and compliance on z/OS.
Work Experience Required: 7+ years in relevant mainframe system administration and programming.
Experienced in managing large-scale enterprise mainframe operations within SLA-driven environments, with strong root cause and problem determination skills.
Familiar with automation, monitoring tools (e.g., Tivoli, OMEGAMON, NetView), and modernization efforts including hybrid cloud and DevOps practices related to mainframe.
Demonstrated leadership in system administration with ability to mentor, coordinate with vendors, and drive operational excellence and transformation initiatives.
